Piers Morgan believes Arsenal should recruit a ‘real striker’ to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Piers Morgan believes Arsenal must recruit Ivan Toney if they are to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League championship this season.
During a call with talkSPORT on Monday, Morgan, a Gunners fan, argued why Mikel Arteta’s side should make a January bid for the Brentford attacker.
Toney, who was barred from playing until January 2024 after receiving an eight-month ban for violating betting rules, has recently returned to Brentford training.
In fact, manager Thomas Frank said that the Premier League club has a 16-week plan in place to prepare Toney for a January debut.
Morgan, on the other hand, wants Arsenal to make a move in the next transfer window.
“I think we need to go and get Ivan Toney or someone like him in January because we need a proper striker,” he stated.
“Every Arsenal fan knows this and I think we’ve been kidding ourselves for too long that we can exist without one and the truth is that we can’t.”
Morgan mentioned Kai Havertz, who has struggled since joining from Chelsea in the summer, when asked how they could fund a prospective deal for the England international.
“We could sell Kai Havertz and get our £70 million back!” he replied.
“People ask me what I would have done, and what I would have done is gone to Napoli and offered £150 million for Osimhen, and everyone says ‘that’s nuts,’ but we just spent nearly half of that on Havertz, who doesn’t appear to be anywhere near the standard we need to win the league.”
“The thinking is very small-time thinking to me.” We went and got Declan Rice, who was fantastic. We have some terrific players in that team, such as Saliba, who was roaring again yesterday, Odegaard, who is fantastic when he’s on form, and Martinelli, who we’ve really missed.”
“We’ve got a lot of great players, but if you don’t have a proper striker, you’re not going to win the league,” Morgan added. I apologize because Arsenal fans may find this offensive but if we’re serious we’ve got to go out in January and get him.”
Is Toney the perfect man to help Arsenal challenge for the Premier League title this season?
