“He is far cheaper and far better than Zubemendi, it will be an ice cold duo partnering him with Declan Rice” – Arteta renews interest in signing the Spanish anchorman.
Arsenal’s desire to bolster their midfield arsenal has rekindled their interest in Zubimendi. They made a daring £53 million approach for this Spanish international earlier this year, but it fell short.
With only two caps for Spain but a world of potential, the 24-year-old is restricted by a £53million (€60m) release clause at Real Sociedad, his Basque club.
And, if football whispers are to be believed, he’s turning a lot of heads in both La Liga and the English Premier League.
The relationship between a club and its academy product is frequently fraught with emotion. So it was no surprise that Zubimendi elected to stay with Sociedad last year, especially given the attraction of playing in Europe’s prestigious Champions League.
Sociedad have been nothing short of outstanding this season, playing under the bright lights of Europe. Their campaign has been impressive, standing tall against previous season’s finalists, Inter, and recording commanding victory over stalwarts such as RB Salzburg and Benfica. Zubimendi, with his never-ending enthusiasm, was everywhere, clocking every minute of these high-octane encounters.
Zubimendi’s development has been spectacular in Spain, where the midfield battleground often determines the victor. Because of his effect, rumors of him being a potential successor to the iconic Sergio Busquets at Barcelona have become stronger. While Barcelona recently chose Oriol Romeu, many believe Zubimendi is the long-term heir to the throne.
His potential move to the Emirates, as reported by Spanish publication AS, caused a stir this summer. Despite the fact that the transfer was thought to be’very near,’ Arsenal surprised everyone by signing Declan Rice from West Ham. Nonetheless, Calciomercato reports that Arsenal are still interested in Zubimendi, as well as Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni.
Barcelona’s Xavi openly expressed his appreciation for Zubimendi, saying, “He is a more physical and faster player than Busquets, who is technically better.” However, Zubimendi and the rest of Sociedad’s midfield are formidable. They make an excellent team, with Zubimendi standing out.”
The Arsenal Midfield Dilemma
Arsenal’s midfield is in turmoil, with Granit Xhaka making way for Rice this summer and Thomas Partey’s future uncertain. This may be the perfect storm that leads the North London club back to Zubimendi.
