Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will not win the Premier League title, according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, unless Arsenal’s phenomenal star player is sold.
Carragher: Arsenal ‘will never’ win the Premier League with Ramsdale; Schmeichel criticizes Arteta for causing a ‘trouble’
Arsenal will never win the Premier League with Aaron Ramsdale in goal, according to Jamie Carragher.
Mikel Arteta started new signing David Raya ahead of the England international in the Gunners’ previous two games, according to the former Liverpool man.
Arteta’s choice has ignited a heated debate about who should be Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper and whether rotating the position is beneficial to the team.
Raya, according to Carragher, is simply a better keeper than Ramsdale. However, former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who was also a CBS Sports pundit, disagrees.
“Do you consider Raya to be a better goalkeeper than Ramsdale?” Schmeichel inquired of Carragher, “Because I don’t.”
Carragher then responded, “100% (Raya is better).” Arsenal will never win the Premier League with Ramsdale in goal.”
“Ramsdale is playing for Arsenal, but he can’t even get into the England team,” he said.
Ramsdale started England’s last match, a friendly against Scotland, but Jordan Pickford is Gareth Southgate’s preferred goalkeeper.
Schmeichel said that Ramsdale’s participation in the England team was unrelated to the dispute. He believes the 25-year-old has made a positive contribution to Arsenal since his arrival in 2021.
“That is a completely different debate, and I don’t understand that,” Schmeichel answered. “But I think he’s done fantastically well.”
“I didn’t expect this when he signed from Sheffield United.” I had no idea why Arsenal was spending so much money on Ramsdale because I didn’t see it.
“However, what he’s done is that he’s won me over.” I believe he is a highly consistent and stable goalie who makes very few errors.
“He’s done a fantastic job with his goalkeeping.” But what surprised me was how he played with his feet and distribution while participating in play. “I’m not sure why Arteta wants to cause this problem.”
Ramsdale has appeared in 83 games for Arsenal, keeping 30 clean sheets in the process.
Raya, on the other hand, joined Brentford on a season-long loan (£3m loan fee) this summer. Arsenal can make the move permanent for £27 million at the conclusion of the season.
As previously stated, he has started the Gunners’ last two games, against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday and PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday, and has kept a clean sheet in both.
It would be intriguing to see if Arteta uses the Spaniard in Sunday’s North London derby against Tottenham.
