Manchester United Legend Rio Ferdinand referred to an Arsenal player as a “joke” after acknowledging that Manchester United should have signed him rather than Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, may have just decided on David Raya as his new No. 1 goalkeeper.

This is according to Anton Ferdinand, who discussed the Gunners’ loan stopper on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE.

Arsenal made the rather unusual choice to sign Raya from Brentford during the summer.

Aaron Ramsdale had just finished another fantastic season with the Gunners when he was loaned out.

Arsenal paid the Bees £3 million to secure Raya for the 2022-23 season, according to Sky Sports.

The agreement includes a £27 million option for the Gunners to sign him permanently.

The Spaniard earned his Premier League debut in the weekend’s 1-0 win over Everton.

He then onto the field for Arsenal’s first Champions League match of the season, against PSV Eindhoven.

In an interview prior of Wednesday’s match, Ferdinand stated that he believes Arteta has already made his decision.

He initially defined Raya as “so good he’s a joke.”

Later, Ferdinand stated, “I think Raya is number one, and there’s no turning back.”

“I think Arteta was just waiting for the right moment to stick him in, and that’s his number one.”

Then Danny Murphy said, “But he didn’t do anything wrong, Rams.”

“I know,” Ferdinand answered, “but he has a preference for some reason.”

“He hasn’t stated what that reason is, but I’m sure it’s been discussed internally.”

“As a defender, there is no better feeling than having someone behind you who is a calming influence.”

“It calms you down, settles you down, and makes you concentrate on your game.”

Arteta was harsh when it came to Bernd Leno, and the same might be said of Ramsdale now.

Raya is a world-class goalkeeper who has previously demonstrated his ability to impress at Arsenal.
